Bagerhat trawler capsize: Death toll rises to 12

Bagerhat: Seven more bodies, who had gone missing after a trawler capsized in the Panguchi River under Morelganj upazila in the district on Tuesday morning, were recovered from the river on Thursday, raising the death toll to 12.

Floating bodies of a child, two women and four men were recovered from the river around 7:00 am Thursday.

Four of the deceased were identified as Abdul Majid, 75, son of late Kashem Sheikh of Polerhat area, Sazzad Hossain, 2, son of Shah Alam, Ansar Ali, son of Abdul Gafur and Rafiqul Islam, 35, son of Salam Sheikh of Kalikabari village of the upazila while the identities of the others could not be known immediately.

Morelganj thana officer in-charge Rashedul Alam said so far a total of 12 bodies have been recovered while ten others still remained missing.

Being informed by local people, a team of Fire Service recovered the seven bodies from different points of the river in the morning, said assistant deputy director of Bangerhat Fire Service and Civil Defense Masud Sardar.

Earlier, on Wednesday, members of Fire Service, Coast Guards, Bangladesh Navy, police and local people retrieved the body of Rima Begum, 22, wife of Nawab Ali of Putkhali village of the upazila.

On Tuesday around 10:30 am the trawler capsized carrying a total of 50-60 passengers while going to Morelganj puratanghat from Chholombaria Kheyaghat of the upazila.
