Beckoning Baishakh

Just as we are saying farewell to spring, summer is nearly upon us and that means only one thing — time to prepare for the celebration of Pahela Baishakh, but before heading to your favourite clothing store, do not forget to check out the fashion exhibition, “Nabo Anondey Baishakh” that will highlight Bangladeshi traditions, culture and heritage translated on to Bengali and contemporary outfits by ten of the best designers of the country.

The event, “Nabo Anondey Baishakh,” hosted by the Fashion Design Council Bangladesh, is gearing up to celebrate Pahela Baishakh by showcasing the works of noted designers — Maheen Khan, Farah Anjum Bari, Shahrukh Amin, Nawshin Khair, Lipi Khandker, Chandana Dewan, Kuhu, Biplop Shaha, Maria Islam, and Rupo Shams.

The designers will be exhibiting a range of children’s wear, saris, kurtis and panjabis, all inspired by motifs and patterns found in historical terracotta and antique pieces that once were widely used in architectural designs of mosques, and temples.

The event will be taking place at the outdoor section of Gardenia Restaurant, where there will also be musical performances by bauls, display of patachitra, figurines made from shola (Indian cork) and heritage costumes from other SAARC countries, which will add to the diversity of the celebration.

Maheen Khan’s bespoke line draws inspiration from the colours of late spring and summer, with an emphasis on royal green and other vibrant shades. Her entire collection is based on patterns found in heritage pieces like shitolpatis, shatranji, and tapestries, to name a few.

The two day exhibition will start from 31 March to 1 April, and will be held at the Gardenia Restaurant located at House NW(I) #8, Road 51, Gulshan 2.
