UP chairman jailed over Tk 1.78cr graft

A Upazila Parishad chairman of Jessore has been jailed for amassing wealth amounting to Tk 1.78 crore illegally.

Convicted Sabira Sultana, Jhikargacha Upazila chairman, is now on the run. She is said to have hidden Tk 70 crore wealth from her statement.

Judge Md Shahidul Islam of the Special Judge Court-6 of Dhaka handed down the sentence in absence of the convict. The punishment of the fugitive will be effective from the day of her arrest or surrender.

According to the prosecution, it was alleged that in 2009 the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) asked her to submit her wealth statement within seven days.

Later, she submitted her statement to ACC where the commission found Tk 1.78 crore illegal wealth and Tk 70 lakh concealed wealth.

The ACC then filed a case against Sabira on January 9, 2011 with Dhanmondi Police Station.

Sabira was present at the court during the previous hearing of the case on July 10.
