Police on Thursday arrested a school teacher for attempting to rape a fifth-grade schoolgirl, in the course of over a year, in Gabtali upazila of Bogra.
The arrested was identified as Saiful Reza Hiru, 52, assistant teacher of Telihata Moddhopara Government Primary School.
According to locals, the accused Saiful—for over a year—tried to rape the girl on several occasions, calling her to his office, and his house. After the recent rape attempt on the girl, she notified her parents, who sought help from locals. Subsequently, angry locals stormed the school, and locked Saiful at the school library for over three hours.
After learning of this development, police from the Gabtali model police station, arrived at the school, arrested the suspect, and promised proper justice to the aggravated locals.
Senior Assistant Superintendent of Police (Gabtali circle) Sabina Yasmin confirmed the matter, and said: “Based on the conversation with the girl, we believe the allegations to be true.”
The girl’s mother filed a case with the police station in the afternoon, she added.
“The girl will be sent to a hospital for medical tests, and later taken before the Judicial Magistrate Court to record her statement,” she said.
The headmaster of the school was unavailable for comment, as his phone was found switched off.
